DES344 Residential Wood Construction FAQs: Woodn’t You Like to Know “Two”?
About Course
Residential structures often create the same issues over and over again across the country. Code professionals working with these structures will wind up asking the same questions as they encounter these issues. We’ve collected some of the most common questions we’ve been asked over the years and have compiled them into this program. This updated program will examine these questions and discuss best practices and other helpful pointers that will benefit code officials and designers and the construction community. The topics range from residential decks, engineered wood products, common connection issues, and other odd topics or information that doesn’t quite fit into other programs.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify common issues on residential decks and their solutions discussed in DCA-6, including ledger connections, guard requirements, proper connectors used in decks, and common deck design errors
- Gain valuable knowledge of how to apply connection provisions in the NDS and other sources relevant to residential wood design, including where to find design data, how to design connectors and sample calculations for nail withdrawal
- List resources available to address common wood design and construction questions which will make it easier to find correct design values for wood, connectors and code requirements
- Understand and be able to recall resources for odd issues that don’t come up very often, including permanent wood foundations, naturally durable wood, finger jointed lumber, and online tools and resources
Funding provided in part by the Softwood Lumber Board.
